.DISCUSSION...
Weak trough continues its trek across the region and expected
to cross Central California this Friday. Winds and temperatures
are the two elements mostly affected by the passage of the weak
disturbance as breezy to windy conditions persist over the
favored locations. Temperatures are also under the influence of
the disturbance as Max temperatures today struggle to reach 90
degrees. The Joaquin Valley had highs in the lower to mid 90s on
Thursday, May 22nd. The Kern Desert even managed to reach the
century mark with China Lake reporting a 100 degree high. The
Memorial Day Weekend will be in the wake of the disturbance as
temperatures remain slightly above normal and winds persist
during the afternoons and over the more favored locations.
Current ensemble mean upper-air analysis has the weak trough
over Central California today and shifts its over the Great
Basin on Saturday. The arrival of the trough will continue the
provide the area with a more significant pressure gradient as
breezy conditions are expected this afternoon. Probability of
Exceedance (PoE) of wind gusts reaching 25 mph is afternoon sits
between 25% (over most of Central California) to near 80% (over
Kern Desert) today. PoE of reaching 45 mph over the Kern Desert
sits at 30%-50% today for the same time frame. Saturday will
see similar conditions with slightly lower probabilities as
breezy conditions remain below any advisory criteria. PoE of
breezy to windy conditions drops-off even further on Sunday as a
weak ridge moves through the area ahead of a stronger trough
expected on Monday. By then, Probabilities go back up as the
winds continue.
The current trough will affect temperatures highs struggle to
reach 90 degrees for a few days. PoE of reaching 90s is below
10% today and remains below 20% on Saturday outside of the
Lemoore/Coalinga area. Sundays short-wave ridge will allow for
widespread 20%-30% across the San Joaquin Valley and 60%-90%
over the Desert. Therefore, a return to 90s will be seen on
Sunday, however, the stronger trough on Monday will help knock-
down temperatures on Memorial Day. High return to the 80s as PoE
of reaching 90 fall below 10%. With the stronger trough
expected to be more progressive, temperatures show a sign of
rebounding on Tuesday and starting a warming trend going toward
Friday. PoE of 90 degrees shows gains during the latter part of
the week and reach 70%-90% by Friday. PoE of 95 degrees even has
a near 50% value on Friday as well. GETTING WARM.
On other thing to note is the wrap around flow from the weak
trough passage on Saturday. The northerly flow introduced by the
low sitting near Las Vegas will allow for weak instability to
exist over the Sierra Nevada near Yosemite. Will expect weak
thunderstorms (convective clouds) during the afternoon hours
over the Sierra Crest on both Saturday and Sunday as PoE of
thunder sits at 5%-10%.
